Thing 1/Thing 2
Already commented on Thing 1 and 2 in comments...however...hadn't thought about today's technology and "participatory culture" before. I get it and can agree about using what kids have their heads into 24/7 to teach. I just worry about the lack of human connection in all of this. I guess you are going to argue that the Internet is the height of connectedness. I, on the other hand, view face-to-face, personal eye contact as the exemplar for "connecting" to someone. Looking at the name of my blog, Readers are Doers, being an avid reader on the Internet--nonfiction reading--can only increase a student's background knowledge and therefore result in good questions as you read that deepen comprehension--the whole point of reading. That's a plus!

A great way to utilize a blog with readers is to create a book blog. After reading that we need to think of a blog as walking into someone's living room and carrying on a conversation, that's just what a book club is all about. Feedback and reactions would not be as fast, but responses might be more thoughtful?
Love the blog, the title and the spirit. I am an avid reader, myself. (My kids bought me a Kindle for Fathers' Day,) Try to think of Web 2.0 as an additional way to connect with today's children, not a replacement for face-to-face connection.
Agreed. Think of web 2.0 as the Telegraph, radio or Telephone. It's just another way of communicating and collaborating.
For me it doesn't replace face-to-face with those who are located close enough to allow that. It provides connections with those dispersed over distance. Where as you wouldn't (couldn't or shouldn't) drive to your student's homes to engage in a conversation after hours, you can communicate using the tools provided under the umbrella of web 2.0.
Good point about communicating after hours...I have done this numerous times, however, if I am discussing a student's progress, or lack of, I always make a phone call. I find it much more personal and feel I owe a parent this.
Completed Thing 4...am confused as how I just post like I did for my Thing1/Thing2 reflection above. All I seem able to do is post a comment as I am doing now. Anyway I hooked up to RSS and finally figured out how to create a folder. I created a news folder with several newscasts, a reading strategies folder, misc. folder and 23Things folder. It is going to take me awhile to feel comfortable with all of this. It's fun to be able to do something my husband has not done and he is very computer literate. Ha! Please let me know about creating a new post versus posting a comment.
Reflecting on Thing 5...adding blogs was relatively easy. I had difficulty using Mozilla Firefox. Easiest using blogger feed and cut and paste. I will enjoy reading the Little School House blog and the Free Things for Teachers. When do people get the time to read all this "stuff"? I enoy spending time with my husband when I am not doing school related work--never mind brousing.
Please check your email. I sent you directions for creating posts, rather than comments on this single post. Email if you need help. Skip and I are here for you.
