Already commented on Thing 1 and 2 in comments...however...hadn't thought about today's technology and "participatory culture" before. I get it and can agree about using what kids have their heads into 24/7 to teach. I just worry about the lack of human connection in all of this. I guess you are going to argue that the Internet is the height of connectedness. I, on the other hand, view face-to-face, personal eye contact as the exemplar for "connecting" to someone. Looking at the name of my blog, Readers are Doers, being an avid reader on the Internet--nonfiction reading--can only increase a student's background knowledge and therefore result in good questions as you read that deepen comprehension--the whole point of reading. That's a plus!
